Wolfgang Van Halen has publicly affirmed his support for a potential archival Van Halen album spearheaded by his uncle, Alex Van Halen, despite having limited insight into the project's current status. He conveyed his readiness to contribute in any capacity required.
Earlier this month, Alex Van Halen disclosed plans to complete a collection of unreleased recordings, originally intended for a new Van Halen album before the passing of his brother and bandmate, Eddie Van Halen, in 2020. He revealed that Toto guitarist Steve Lukather has been enlisted in a co-producer role. Alex indicated that the foundational drum tracks (his own), guitar parts (Eddie's), and bass lines (Wolfgang's) are already present. The primary challenge appears to be securing a vocalist, as Paul Rodgers reportedly declined an offer, and past vocalists David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar remain out of contention.
During a recent interview with Eddie Trunk, Wolfgang expressed some uncertainty regarding the specific recordings Alex referenced. "I mean, I haven't played anything yet, so I'm not sure what Al is talking about in that respect," he stated, speculating that they might be older ideas from sessions involving his father, uncle, and himself approximately 15 years ago.
Emphasizing his supportive stance, Wolfgang clarified his role: "I'm really just here in a position of helping him with whatever he needs. If he needs bass on something, I'm there. If he needs anything else, I'm there." He reiterated that Alex is the driving force behind the endeavor, with Wolfgang serving in a supportive capacity.
Wolfgang joined Van Halen as the bassist in 2007, coinciding with the return of original lead singer David Lee Roth. This lineup undertook three successful North American tours and released what currently stands as the band's final studio album, 2012's A Different Kind of Truth.
Currently, Wolfgang is touring in support of Mammoth WVH's third album, The End, with upcoming dates commencing March 5.
